random notes (of city, of wilderness)

I

secret air
invokes the moon
arisen
within iridescence
of an eagle’s flight.

II

this morning -
pure, filled with kittens’ purr -
soon
they shall see the first green
and i’ll gather snowdrops.

III

frozen bones of autumn on blue ice.
i’m numb and far from here
somewhere
in kisses of tropical waterfalls.

IV

oh days of white satin clouds
beneath the cotton-threaded horizon..

a samurai once said
‘pastel waves would hail on this town
that exhales rust and a-minor’

V

borealis –
the blurred elegy of polar stars
binding hope’s smolder
with the crescent ribbon
as gossamer nebulae flicker
between the violet fogs.

VI

grey and amber waltz
across pavements stained with sepia.
cedars sway
lullabied by the aerial piano.
Schumann’s lucid lieder
accompany the slumber of leaves.

inside
it’s calm.

VII

the dale is near.
we hold lanterns and smile.

we lighten the inner door
welcoming us to greet the faun.

VIII

‘to become dew
and bloom amid the sylvan arbor
robed in petals
of a wilder orchid..’

the wolf howls
for no answer
and becomes the answer

‘to be free’

  1. Martin says:

Beautiful and mysterious. (I wish I was more acquainted with your fine vocabulary.) Some lines make me sigh and feel a whiff of familiar pain.
Btw a town that exhales rust sounds promising to me (thinking of steel plants).
A happy and inspiring New Year to you : ))

thanks so much dear Martin *sends a mysterious jasmine aura to one western land on the wings of the wind* :-)
also — i’ll send you an explanation about the rusty town soon~

      • Martin says:

After rereading it I see the coherence more clearly … Jasmine scented snow on wings of Eastern winds would be very welcome; the winds from the West are warmer but too rainy ;-)

      • yelena says:

i truly hope this jasmine snow would somehow reach you through ether and warm your heart ;)

Just opened my laptop to read and sip my coffee and I’m greeted with your brilliance! These ‘random notes’ are poetic jewels. I’m not sure I like one more than the other but that last one particularly moves me. And I now I miss having a kitten too. :-)

Jennifer, you just made my day. thanks so much for always kindling my inspiration with your words. i have six kittens in the apartment now…meowing and playing and running around all the time. i love them all and for now can’t stand the thought of giving them away ..because in fact we have other five adult cats. i begin to dream an impossible dream of moving to the countryside to keep them all lol..

  3. Stanza VII fascinates me the most. I find the image of the lantern to be exquisite as I imagine this small lamp marking a bridge between the inner and outer worlds of human and animal music in this poem. This is what comes to me upon first reading.

      hi Jeremy :)
thanks for the comment, glad you liked this one as it’s particularly special to me.
it’s actually the allusion to the beginning of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis when Lucy discovers a secret door leading to the magical land of Narnia….

  4. i think “exquisite” is a small word for this series.

  5. Your morning starts with kittens purring… JEALOUS!!!!
