(my translation)

The first piano sonnet, a poem by Innokenty Annensky (1904, from ‘Quiet songs’)

There is a magic book of phantom dreams
Along the garden of its pages scattered:
Filled with a night light and bizarre myths
Hidden in subtle leaves of ancient maples.

There, from the outlines of troubled spaces,
Too drunk with spells of opal moon,
The empty white reveals ten reckless maenads
ascending up the keys of reverie bloom.

And, drenched in emeralds of their wrists,
I’m lifted, yet in suffering:
They, crystal clear and furiously proud.

I need to break the chains of silver…
But there’s no parting, there’s no peace and no oblivion,
And their narrow traces cut and cut my heart…

  1. dear Martin, thank you so much for the appreciation as always. Annensky is not very well known even in Russia, but his poetry is special to me like no other classical Russian writer’s poetry. it’s uneasy to translate, but i try to and i’ll keep on trying. glad that you enjoyed~
